Anthurium Care Guide

Anthurium Care Guide

Bold, exotic, and long-lasting, the Anthurium—also known as the Flamingo Flower or Laceleaf—is a stunning tropical plant admired for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant flowers. While commonly recognized for their red spathes, Anthuriums also come in shades of pink, white, purple, and even green. With the right care, they can bloom repeatedly throughout the year, adding a pop of color and elegance to any indoor space.

Simple Care Instructions for the Anthurium

Light Requirements

Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect light. Too little light will reduce flowering and result in slower growth, while direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and spathes.

Ideal placement: near an east- or west-facing window filtered by a sheer curtain. If you’re not seeing blooms, the plant may need more light.

Watering Needs

Water your Anthurium when the top inch of soil feels dry. These plants enjoy a consistent watering schedule, but they don’t like soggy soil. Allow excess water to drain completely after each watering, and never let the plant sit in water.

Drooping or yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, while brown tips can signal dryness.

Humidity and Temperature

As tropical plants, Anthuriums prefer high humidity and warm temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Dry indoor air can cause leaf tips to brown or flowers to fade quickly.

To boost humidity, try placing the plant on a pebble tray, running a humidifier nearby, or grouping it with other tropical plants.

Avoid cold drafts and never expose to temps below 55°F (13°C), as cold can quickly damage the plant.

Soil and Fertilizing

Use a chunky, well-draining soil mix: a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based potting mix works well. Good aeration around the roots is essential to prevent rot and promote healthy growth.

Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a high-phosphorus houseplant fertilizer to support blooming. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to salt buildup and leaf damage.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting Tips

Brown Leaf Tips – Low Humidity or Underwatering
Symptoms: Crispy or dry edges on leaves and flowers.
Cause: Air is too dry or inconsistent watering.
Solution: Increase humidity and adjust watering frequency.

Yellowing or Borwning Leaves – Overwatering
Symptoms: Lower leaves turn yellow and drop.
Cause: Roots are sitting in soggy soil.
Solution: Let soil dry out more between waterings and ensure proper drainage.

Lack of Flowers – Low Light or Nutrients
Symptoms: Healthy foliage but no blooms.
Cause: Inadequate light or lack of phosphorus.
Solution: Move to brighter indirect light and fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a bloom-boosting formula.

Pale Leaves – Too Much Sun or Salt Buildup
Symptoms: Faded or bleached leaves.
Cause: Excessive direct sun or mineral accumulation.
Solution: Move to softer light and flush soil with water occasionally to clear salts.

Seasonal Care Tips

To coax your Anthurium to bloom, ensure it's receiving bright, indirect light, consistent humidity, and regular feeding with a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. Blooming is more likely when the plant feels happy in its environment—this includes being slightly rootbound and kept warm.
