During its active growing season—typically spring through early fall—you may notice new leaves unfurling every few weeks. Growth tends to slow down in the winter months when the plant enters a more dormant phase.
To encourage healthy and consistent growth, place your Stromanthe Triostar in bright, indirect light, maintain high humidity, and keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Proper care, including occasional feeding with a balanced houseplant fertilizer, can also support more robust growth and vibrant foliage.
While it’s not as fast-growing as some trailing houseplants like Pothos, with the right care, a Stromanthe Triostar can grow steadily and develop into a lush, full plant over time.
Watering a Stromanthe Triostar correctly is key to keeping it healthy and vibrant. This plant prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil, so aim to water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be careful not to let it dry out completely, as this can cause stress and lead to crispy leaf edges.
When watering, use room-temperature, filtered, or distilled water, especially if your tap water is high in salts, fluoride, or chlorine, which the Stromanthe Triostar is sensitive to. Pour water evenly around the base of the plant until it drains freely from the bottom. Be sure to empty any excess water from the saucer to prevent root rot.
Humidity also plays a role in how often you’ll need to water. In dry environments or during warmer months, your Triostar may need more frequent watering (ie every 5–7 days) while cooler or more humid conditions may only require watering every 10 days or so.
Brown tips on your Stromanthe Triostar are a common sign that the plant is experiencing some stress, often related to its environmental conditions or watering routine. The most frequent causes include:
Low Humidity: Stromanthe Triostars are native to tropical regions and thrive in high-humidity environments. Dry indoor air, especially in winter, can lead to browning leaf edges and tips. Boost humidity with a humidifier, pebble tray, or by grouping plants together.
Inconsistent Watering: Letting the soil dry out too much between waterings or overwatering can both cause stress, resulting in brown tips. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, and avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Water Quality: These plants are sensitive to chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, and salt, which are commonly found in tap water. Using filtered, distilled, or rainwater can help reduce browning.
Fertilizer Burn: Over-fertilizing or using a fertilizer that’s too strong can lead to salt buildup in the soil, which may cause the tips to turn brown. Flush the soil occasionally with clean water to remove excess salts.
Keeping a consistent care routine and optimizing humidity and water quality will help your Stromanthe Triostar stay healthy and maintain its beautiful, colorful foliage.
