The 10 Commandments of Pothos Care

1. Let In the Light…Or Not

Pothos enjoys bright, indirect light, yet will tolerate low-light conditions with remarkable patience. In lower light, growth slows and variegation (if present) may fade, but the plant remains resilient and lovely.

2. Water Only When Dry

Let the top inch or two of soil dry out before watering again. Pothos dislikes sitting in soggy soil, and on the other hand forgives occasional forgetfulness. Water thoroughly, then allow excess to drain. Expect watering every 1–3 weeks, depending on light and season. What's so great about the Pothis is it will show you when it's ready for more water by dramatically wilting its vines.

3. Ensure Excellent Drainage

Use a pot with drainage holes and a light, airy soil mix. Pothos roots prefer room to breathe and are prone to rot when trapped in overly wet soil.

4. All Your Pothos to Climb or Cascade

In its natural habitat, Pothos climbs trees toward the canopy. Indoors, it’s equally content cascading from shelves or trained to climb a support. Offer it direction, and it will reward you with lush, trailing vines.

5. Practice Moderation in Feeding

A gentle feeding once a month in spring and summer using a diluted, balanced fertilizer encourages fuller growth. In fall and winter, fertilize less frequently or let the plant rest without additional nutrients.

6. Trim Freely!

Pruning keeps vines full and bushy. Remove leggy or yellowing leaves, and trim long runners to encourage branching. Cuttings can even be rooted in water for new plants — a generous gift from plant to caretaker.

7. Rotate for Even Growth

Vines will reach for the light. To keep growth even and full, rotate your Pothos every time you water. This simple act prevents lopsided foliage and promotes harmony of shape.

9. Repot When You See the Roots

Pothos is not demanding, but when roots circle the pot or push through drainage holes, offer a slightly larger home with fresh soil. Repotting every 1–2 years keeps growth vigorous.

9. Monitor Variegation

If your Pothos is variegated and begins producing mostly green leaves, it may be craving brighter light. Move it slightly closer to a bright, indirect source to restore its natural patterns.
