How often should I water my Pothos?

Watering is a key aspect of Pothos plant care, and getting the timing right can make all the difference in keeping your plant healthy and thriving. As a general rule, you should water your Pothos whenever the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. This plant prefers to dry out slightly between waterings, making it a low-maintenance choice that doesn’t require constant attention.

A helpful indicator that your Pothos needs water is wilting or drooping leaves. Pothos plants are quite resilient and will often give you a clear signal when they’re thirsty. If the leaves begin to look limp or droopy, it’s likely time to water. After a thorough watering, most Pothos plants perk back up within 24 hours, quickly regaining their vibrant appearance.

To water properly, soak the soil evenly until water begins to drain from the bottom of the pot. Be sure to empty any excess water from saucers or cache pots to prevent root rot, as Pothos plants do not like to sit in soggy soil.

Keep in mind that watering frequency can vary depending on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light levels, and the size of the pot. In warmer, brighter conditions, your Pothos may need water more frequently—about once every 7 to 10 days—while in cooler or lower-light environments, it may go 2 weeks or more between waterings.

What kind of light do Pothos plants need?

Pothos plants (Epipremnum aureum) are known for their adaptability and are incredibly versatile when it comes to lighting. They grow best in bright, indirect light, which encourages faster growth and larger, more vibrant leaves. A spot near a north- or east-facing window, or a few feet back from a sunnier window, is ideal.

However, one of the reasons Pothos are such popular houseplants is their ability to tolerate low-light environments. While they won’t grow as quickly or as full in dim conditions, they’ll still survive and maintain their trailing charm. This makes them suitable for offices, bathrooms, or corners of rooms where natural light is limited.

Be cautious of direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon, as it can burn the leaves and cause them to yellow or develop brown, crispy spots. If you're growing variegated varieties like Golden Pothos or Marble Queen, brighter light will help maintain their coloration—too little light, and their patterns may fade to solid green.

Pothos can also adapt to artificial light, making them a good option for spaces with fluorescent or LED lighting. Just be sure to rotate the plant occasionally to encourage even growth.
