Featured Questions
How big do Aglaonemas grow?
Aglaonemas, also known as Chinese Evergreens, are generally slow to moderate growers. The growth rate can vary based on the specific variety—some more compact types grow slower, while larger-leafed or more colorful cultivars may grow a bit faster under optimal conditions.
During the growing season, which typically runs from spring through early fall, you may see new leaves emerging every few weeks if the plant is receiving bright, indirect light, consistent watering, and moderate humidity. Growth slows significantly in the winter months, which is natural for most tropical houseplants.
Although not fast growers, Aglaonemas are low-maintenance and long-living, making them a reliable and beautiful addition to your indoor plant collection.
How often should I water my Aglaonema?
Proper watering is essential to keeping your Aglaonema healthy. These plants prefer soil that is kept lightly moist but never soggy. Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. In general, watering every 7 to 10 days works well during the growing season, while less frequent watering is needed in the winter.
Always check the soil moisture with your finger before watering, and be sure your pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom, which can lead to root rot. When watering, soak the soil evenly until water begins to drain out the bottom, then empty any excess from the saucer.
Aglaonemas are somewhat tolerant of irregular watering but perform best with a consistent routine. They also benefit from using filtered or room-temperature water, especially in areas with hard tap water that contains salts or chlorine.
What kind of light do Aglaonemas need?
Aglaonemas or Chinese Evergreens prefers bright, indirect sunlight and will thrive near a window that receives filtered light. That said, this plant can tolerate low light very very well, but it will grow more slowly and require less watering. Avoid placing it in direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
