Black Olive Tree Care Guide

Black Olive Tree Care Guide

The Black Olive Tree, also known as Bucida Buceras or the Shady Lady Olive Tree, is a stunning indoor plant native to tropical regions and admired for its airy, Mediterranean look and minimalist appeal. Despite its name, it’s not actually an olive tree and doesn’t produce fruit—it simply resembles one with its whispy, elegant structure.

Simple Care Instructions for the Black Olive Tree

Light Requirements

Black Olive Trees require at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, though they have been known to adjust to slightly less light over time. They can be placed outdoors in full sun or partial shade, or indoors near a south-facing window. To maintain a full, lush canopy, ensure that all foliage receives direct light.

Watering Needs

Black Olive Trees need plenty of water when they’re first adjusting to a new environment, and you will immediately notice how quickly your tree absorbs water during the first few weeks in its new home. Allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings, and water thoroughly when it’s dry, typically once every 3-5 days during the acclimation period, and after that, usually every 5-7 days. The watering frequency will vary based on the tree’s location and the amount of direct sunlight it gets. Be sure not to overwater, and keep in mind that during the winter months, your watering schedule may need to be less frequent.

Humidity and Temperature

Black Olive Trees thrive in warm, tropical conditions. They do best in temperatures between 65°F and 80°F with moderate humidity levels around 40–60%. Keeping them in a stable, draft-free environment helps maintain their lush, glossy foliage.

Soil and Fertilizing

For optimal growth, plant your Black Olive Tree in a well-draining soil mix—ideally a blend of high-quality potting soil with perlite or coarse sand—to ensure proper aeration and avoid waterlogging. During the growing season in spring and summer, fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer and reduce or halt fertilization in the fall and winter when growth slows.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting Tips

Sudden Excessive Leaf Drop

Symptoms: Sudden leaf drop, sometimes all at once, causing concern. Leaves may dry out before falling.
Cause: The Black Olive Tree is sensitive to environmental changes, inconsistent care, or seasonal shifts, which can lead to oftentimes dramatic leaf drop.
Solution: If the plant is receiving proper care, don't worry—leaf drop is normal and the leaves should regrow within six to 12 weeks with proper care.

Dry Yellow and/or Brown Leaves

Symptoms: Leaves drying up, turning yellow or brown, often followed by dropping.
Cause: If your plant has recently been moved or if it's seen another change in its environement (ie watering cadence), then your plant most likely is showing signs of acclimation. Like sudden leaf drop, it is not uncommon for the Black Olive Tree's leaves to suddenly turn yellow in multitudes in response to environmental changes. If there have been no changes, yellow leaves may indicate overwatering.
Solution: Once again, if the plant is receiving proper care, don't worry—this is normal behavior for the Black Olive Tree and the plant most often rebounds within several weeks. If you suspect overwatering, check the soil and examine the roots for moisture build up and/or root rot.

Seasonal Care Tips

When you first bring home a Black Olive Tree, it requires more frequent watering during the initial 6-8 weeks as it acclimates to its new environment. During this period, the tree is adjusting to its surroundings, so make sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. As the plant settles in, you’ll start to see how quickly it absorbs water, allowing you to adjust your watering routine accordingly.
